The Scared is Scared – A film by Bianca Giaever

February 11, 2013 By Christina E. Pilz

Today I’m goofing around on Tumblr, which is no better than goofing around on Pinterest or whatever your particular internet drug happens to be. I’m trying not to feel guilty about it, and if you make any confessions to me, I will not point fingers, I promise.

So Tumblr, right? I’ve finally figured out how it works. There’s a post that someone makes about a subject that you like. Then, if you like it, you reblog it. And then maybe someone who’s following you reblogs it again, and then maybe again after that. Some posts only get tumbled once or twice, but others tumble over and over till they rise to the top. It’s not a bad place, and sometimes you find gems tumbling around out there. Gems like this movie, made by a recent college graduate named Bianca Giaever.

The movie, a short, is about 8 minutes long, and in it Bianca asks a young boy what he would like to see in a movie, and then Bianca makes that movie. It’s adorable, and because it is coming out of a young kid’s mind, it has no boundaries, and everything is flexible.

What I like best about the movie is the theme, or what I took to be the theme. Which is “Scared is scared of the things that you like.” So, if you’re nervous that the pool is closing and you won’t be able to go swimming till next year. Or if you are nervous because you have bills and doctor’s appointments. Or if you look at a blank page and can’t think of a thing to write, and it makes you nervous. Well, think of something you like to do and then go do that thing. Go have coffee. Go visit a friend. Do something that makes you feel better. With everything going on in the world, I guess it doesn’t get much simpler than that.
