NaNoWriMo – Day Nine

November 9, 2014 By Christina E. Pilz

When I write, I like to have chunks of time on either side. I need time before I write to get my act together, and I need time after I write, so that I’m not rushing through what I’m doing on account of the fact that I must soon leave to meet someone. So on weekends, that time is there, with wide open spaces all around so that I can get inside the writing, and have a jolly good time doing it. Of course, if one sleeps in (as I did this morning) you do have hustle a little bit, but then, the writing time becomes that much more precious.

I had some fun today, looking up the money system in Victorian times. Just so you know:

  • 12 pence in a shilling
  • 20 shillings in a pound
  • 240 pence to a pound
  • 21 shillings in a guinea

A doctor’s visit can cost anywhere from 2′ 6 (two shillings and sixpence) to an entire Guinea or more. I determined that a country doctor in and around Lyme Regis would charge five shillings at most. For Oliver, the charge is 2’6.

Here’s the current word count:

Day One – 1,998

Day Two – 2,122

Day Three – 1,820

Day Four – 1,820

Day Five – 1,930

Day Six – 1,601

Day Seven – 1,729

Day Eight – 2,363

Day Nine – 2,175

For the treat, I’ve found you this!
